PRR 5812 near Horseshoe Curve Editors Pick!
David Ables comments: This location is near Benny Interlocking, just east of Tunnelhill, PA, which can be seen atop the Allegheny Divide in the upper left of the photo. Not certain of date. Could be 1954 or even 1955. The 5812 entered service in 1947 and was retired in 1962

Rick Erben General We lived about 3 miles from the Main Line when I was a kid. Circa 1960, when these units were in run-em-into-the-ground mode, a few were based out of 46th St. enginehouse in Phila. and used as helpers to Paoli. You could plainly hear them, miles away, for perhaps 20 minutes. As I recall, they sounded as if tugboats plowing through water as they echoed through the night while shoving iron ore west.
